Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to community nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. Our Delta Kappa Chapter is number 104 and was chartered in 1980. There are more than 500 Chapters in institutions of higher education. Sigma has more than 135,000 active members who reside in more than 85 countries. This vision is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people. The mission of Sigma throughout Texas is to support the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health locally and worldwide. The founding mission, goals and initiatives have not changed…. In 2017 at the 44th Biennial Sigma Theta Tau International Convention, a new public logo was introduced: SIGMA. As University Nursing Programs in other countries requested to form Chapters, the name changed to Sigma Theta Tau International. The Honor Society became a national organization. The founders chose the name from the Greek words Storge, Tharsos and Time meaning “love”, “courage” and “honor”.Īs other University Nursing Programs requested to become part of this Honor Society, chapters were formed. Sigma Theta Tau International (Sigma), the Honor Society of Nursing, was founded in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School of Nurses, now Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
